Your Insurance Company
One of the first resources you should explore is your own insurance company. Many insurers track organizations that provide financial assistance for medications, treatments, and experimental therapies. Have a conversation with your provider about what may be available to you.
Your Physician
Doctors who treat cancer are usually well informed about resources available to their patients. Ask at your appointment, or ask the receptionist about programs the practice has used to help others.
211 Resource Directory
Visit 211tn.org or dial 2-1-1 from most phones in Tennessee (and most other states) to reach a 24-hour hotline and referral center for social services. When you speak to the counselor, share your zip code and the type of help you need (childcare, financial aid, etc.) and you will be connected with local resources.
Family Medical Leave Act
Businesses with 50 or more employees fall under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Covered employers must provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to employees with qualifying medical reasons — and this can include caregivers. Many businesses also offer short-term disability coverage to help maintain salaries during this time. Contact your HR department as soon as possible to understand your options.
